humble heroes | peter somuah | mission on earth

Session with jazz trumpeter Peter Somuah. The promising young trumpeter Peter Somuah is originally from Accra, Ghana and is based in Rotterdam. His virtuoso trumpet playing becomes even more impressive when you realize that he taught himself to play. He developed his warm, melancholy sound by listening endlessly to his heroes Miles Davis and Roy Hargrove. In his danceable grooves, you can hear traces of jazz, funk and electronic music, as well as West African styles and traditional Ghanaian rhythms. In the Netherlands, he soon collaborates with artists such as Akwasi and Yung Nnelg. His live reputation does not go unnoticed, this even earns him an Erasmus Jazz award. At 25, Somuah has already shared the stage with many local and international acts and toured in Africa, Asia and Europe. Recently, Peter Somuah won an Edison Jazz Award for his debut album Outer Space. On it he pays tribute to Roy Hargrove ('Dedicated to Roy') and collaborates with rappers Amazumi and Delasi. The jury of the Edison Awards speaks of a 'masterpiece': 'With his self-written album he takes the listener into a musical cosmos where coloring outside the lines and boundaries are stretched. He knows how to connect the new with the already existing and thus creates his own sound.'
